Casting Metal Hobbies, Home Metal Casting, Home Foundry Information

October 16th, 2009

The Do It Yourself movement is certainly not a new one. The term, DIY was popularized in the 1950s but the concept has been around for ages. The concept behind DIY is undertaking a variety of projects either home improvement, restoration, or arts and craft without the help of paid professionals. nnRecently the DIY movement has received a boost of popularity with the aid of the internet. Many are finding that DIY projects are easier to undertake with the help of instructional websites which provide step by step instructions and real advice from people who have actually accomplished the DIY process. Several of these sites provide ideas, photos, message boards, and a sense of community for Do It Yourselfers that was simply not available years ago.nnDIY projects can include any number or projects and ideas. Certainly the most common projects include home improvement such as cabinetry or installing plumbing fixtures, but one of the oldest DIY projects has to be metal casting.nnThe DIY casting movement has been around ever since metal casting itself has been around, which is quite some time. Metal casting is the act of taking molten metal and shaping it with the use of molds into something new. Metal casting has been used in the ancient world for the use of making weapons, jewelry, and even religious icons. Today, DIY metal casting is used to create parts and items for use in a variety of hobbies and restoration projects. This includes home improvement items as well. Metal casting can be used to make door knobs, cabinet handles, and other such items. For hobbyists, small model parts and miniatures can be created. Even artists use metal casting for sculptures and jewelry creation.nnMetal casting possesses the true spirit of Do It Yourself. Many metal casters are drawn to the skill because it provides a cheap alternative to purchasing items or having commercial foundries make custom items. Nearly everything used in metal casting can be made by the caster. The furnace, molds, tools, and many others are made by most casters.nnLike other DIY projects, the DIY casting movement is being helped along my communities that are found online. These communities act as meeting grounds for casters to share and exchange knowledge and ideas, not to mention blueprints for furnaces and ingredients for casting materials. nnMetal casting is the pinnacle of DIY projects as it involves the fabrication of items from metal. After creating a mold of the desired item the caster will melt down iron, brass, or aluminum in a furnace. The molten alloy is poured into the mold and allowed to cool. The cast is removed to reveal a copy of the original pattern. There are several casting methods so undertaking a DIY casting project can be very involved and addicting.nnIn the spirit of DIY, metal casters strive to make the best for the least. A great source for aluminum is soda cans and many casters gladly travel to scrap yards for iron or brass. nnThe DIY casting movement is really gaining steam as many realize how cheap and fun this alternative is.nnGo to Metal Casting Zone to get your free ebook on Metal Casting at Casting. Remove Smithfraud – A Tutorial To Get Smithfraud Removed From Your Computer Forever

October 16th, 2009

If you have come across the blue screen of death you may be infected with Smithfraud. Smithfraud gets onto your CPU through a video codec and turns your screen blue. The Windows blue screen may have an advertisement for a counterfeit rogue anti spyware program to cure your CPU. The advertisement will probably say something along the lines of “your computer is infected”. Do NOT click on this link, all it will do is infect your computer further. Smithfraud is a particularly deadly form of spyware that needs to be removed immediately!nnHow did Smithfraud sneak onto your system? If you were downloading multimedia off the internet and you were prompted to download a codec such as BrainCodec, PCodec or VideoKeyCodec. Those programs are bogus video compressors that install spyware onto your CPU. When you download things online you should always have a realtime anti spyware program running in the background.nnIt can be quite challenging to remove Smithfraud. The reason is Smithfraud will install itself in some of your registry keys. Trying to remove Smithfraud on your own or using typical “run of the mill” spyware removal software will be ineffective. The registry files load into your RAM the second you boot up your computer. When deleted manually the files simply repopulate themselves every time you restart.nnSmithfraud can be quite a handful. There is hope however. What you need to do is scan your computer with the latest and most advance antispyware on the net. The website below detaisl some of the top rated antispyware programs, including my #1 choice which can remove Smithfraud with the click of a button. Don’t sit around while Smithfraud corrupts your registry and destroys your hard drive. Take action to get rid of it right now!

History Of Man Made Diamonds

October 16th, 2009

Henri Moissan (1852-1907) received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1906. In 1892 theorized that by crystallizing carbon with pressure and heat from molten iron he could make diamonds. The then set out to prove his theory by designing and building an electric-arc furnace. He subsequently was able to product several tiny stones that had the same properties as mined diamonds. Thus the start of the man made diamond race was born.
n
n
n
nThe experiment was successfully repeated by Ruffin in 1917 and again by Dr Willard Hershey in 1926. The diamond that was created by Dr Willard Hershey is on display in Kansas at the McPherson Museum. Despite the earlier success, the following experimenters had great difficulty in reproducing the required temperatures and pressures needed by the process and some of the experimenters even lost their lives to explosions.
n
n
n
nIn 1941 General Electric was able to produce a one carat diamond but of very poor quality. It was not until 1954 that General Electric was able to produce commercially synthesis diamonds of a size and quality to be used in the industrial abrasives market. Today over 600 metric tons of commercially produced diamonds are produced for the industrial abrasives market and about 26 metric tons of mined diamonds are produced for gemstone market yearly.
n
n
n
nToday there are two methods used to produce gem quality diamonds. The first is the High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT). If pure carbon in put under pressures of 50,000 atmospheres and temperatures between 1100, and 1400 degrees Celsius will reproduce the environment that creates diamonds inside the Earths core.
n
n
n
nCompanies like Gemesis, New Age Diamonds, Adia Diamonds and Tairus all utilize the HPHT method of producing gem quality man made diamonds. Clear or White diamonds must be produced in an environment that is free of impurities like nitrogen and boron which makes them very difficult and costly to produce. Most diamonds created by the HPHT method will contain some color. Yellow or orange tint occurs when nitrogen atoms replace 5 or more carbon atoms out of each 10,000 atoms. At a level of one or a few boron atoms for every million-carbon atom is replaced, an attractive blue color results.
n
n
n
nThe second method used to produce gem quality diamonds is called Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). When pure carbon and hydrogen is heated to about 1,8000 degrees Fahrenheit a plasma cloud is formed. As the plasma cools carbon will rain out of the mixture and carbon atoms will be deposited on wafer seeds. The wafers will grow at about 1/2 a millimeter a day. The ability to control the injection of impurties allows a greater measure of control in the final diamond composition than the HTHP method. Apollo Diamond uses the CVD method of producing the larger and more expensive man made diamonds.
n
n
n
nMan-made diamonds are very difficult to distinguish from natural ones. A trained jeweler could tell the difference if he could detect the different growth patterns and the lack of inclusions. Inclusions are the tiny bits of material that are usually imbedded in a natural diamond and are considered a flaw. The ability to be able to control the amount and type of inclusion is vital to the ability of the man made diamond to be used in semiconductor applications which in turn will lead to the next generation of computer chips.

David Cowley has created numerous articles on Diamonds. He has also created a Web Site dedicated to Diamonds. Visit http://www.diamonds-team.comn

The Technology of Bluetooth Wireless

October 16th, 2009

The technology of Blue Tooth wireless is a short range communications method intended to replace the cables that connect portable or fixed devices while maintaining the highest levels of security. A fundamental to strength is the ability to handle both data and voice transmissions simultaneously. This will enable users to enjoy varieties of innovative solutions such as hands free talking, printing and fax capabilities, and other applications. A Blue Tooth device that operates in master mode can communicate with up to seven devices that are set in slave mode. To each of the slaves, the master device will send its own unique address and the value of its own internal clock. The information sent is then used to calculate the frequency hop sequences.nnAs a replacement for cable technology, it is usually battery powered, such as wireless mice and battery powered cell phones. To conserve the power, most devices operate in low power. This helps to give a range of around 5 – 10 meters. It is a high speed, low powered wireless link technology that’s designed to connect phones or other portable equipment together with little to no work required by the user. Unlike infrared, it does not require line of site positioning to work. What is important, is the fact that Blue Tooth devices will not drain battery life. The specification targets power consumption of the device, limiting the drain on the battery. The radio chip will consume only 0.3mA in stand by mode, which is less than 5% of the power that standard phones use. And will also guarantee security at the bit level. The authentication is controlled by the user via a 128 bit key. The radio signals can be coded with anything up to 128 bit. With the frequency hopping, it is already very hard to listen into.nnIt has a lot to offer with an increasingly difficult market place. And helps to bring with it the promise of freedom from the cables and simplicity in networking that has yet to be matched by Local Area Network. In the key marketplace, of wireless and handheld devices, the closest competitor to Blue Tooth is infrared. Infrared holds many key features, although the line of sight it provides does not go through walls or through obstacles like that of the technology.nnThere are other ways of connecting wireless devices. One example of such is the infrared. Infrared allows low frequency light waves to transmit signals to another component. This technology is easy to create and the cost of putting the infrared device into a system is rather low. Infrared technology is a one to one process. Due to the limitation, you may only send signals from one device to another, similar to a television set and remote control. You can only transmit signals between the two although not with a separate system.nnYour Mac also has the ability to use technology to communicate with your Palm Operating System handheld. This way, you can perform a Hot Sync operation without using any cables. You can also send your business card or calendar events directly to handheld using the technology. The implementation of Blue Tooth by Apple is the latest in a series of moves that have caused great shift in the computer industry. The technology will take small area networking to the next level by removing the need for user intervention and help keep transmission power very low to preserve battery power. Each transmission signal to and from your cellular phone, giving you plenty of space on your battery to talk. As a solution to wireless, will eliminate the need for messy cords, keeping everything nice and neat. It is perfect for those who like to talk on cell phones, as you no longer need to hold the phone next to your ear which is great for those who travel a lot.nnThese days, all communication technology faces the issue of privacy and identity theft. Almost everyone knows that email services and networks require security. What users of need to realize is that it also requires security measures as well. The good news for users is that the security scares, like most scares, are normally over dramatized and blown entirely out of proportion. The truth being told, these issues are easy to manage, with various measures already in place to provide security.

Bronze Casting Information and Bronze Metal History

October 16th, 2009

Bronze Casting has been practiced for centuries. Many civilizations have used this alloy for weapons, sculptures, and general pieces of hardware. The popular way to cast bronze is the Lost Wax Casting process which was first used sometime in the 3000 BC near ancient Sumeria. The Lost Wax process is still used to this day and its modern equivalent Investment Casting is very popular with jewelry makers.nnBronze is the preferred alloy for metal working artists as it’s relatively easy to work with and resistant to corrosion. The properties of bronze tend to be stronger than most other alloys, except of course for steel, and lends itself easily to the molding and casting process. Many small foundries like the kind that can be found in a backyard or workshop find that bronze is a great material to work with and with a melting point of 1,700 Fahrenheit or about 925 Celsius many homemade furnaces are able to melt down the bronze quickly and efficiently.nnMany modern day artists create their own furnaces with the metal casting in mind. These metal casters employ the Lost Wax Casting method which proves to be the best when dealing with the alloy. The Lost Wax Casting is making an original of the sculpture from wax and then creating a mold using this original. Often times the original is lost during the mold making process so keep that in mind if you want to hang on to the original for whatever reason. Molten wax is poured into the mold which is chased or smoothed of imperfections. During this point, any other pieces are attached and small wax tubes are placed into the piece. These tubes will be how the molten bronze is going to travel into the piece replacing wax with the alloy. When this is complete the artist will create a ceramic shell around the wax model. This shell will help form the molten bronze which will melt the wax. When the molten bronze is poured the bronze takes place of the wax. Afterwards, the artist will crack the shell and reveal the bronze piece. This method allows the transfer of very exact detail from the wax to the bronze.nnPatina is added to the figure at the artist’s discretion. The Patina is a chemical that when applied to bronze creates colors and makes the bronze take an aged look. The Patrina compounds used depends on the type of color desired. Ferric Nitrate will make the bronze take on a red or brown color while Sulphurated Potash will make black and Cupric Nitrate will create blue and green. Modern day artists choose to go with a very high polished bronze instead of using these compounds. This step depends solely on the artist’s taste and the look they are going for. nnBronze casting will remain a popular medium until another alloy is developed that exhibits properties that are easier to manage and are more resistant to corrosion. Casting the alloy is easily done so metal casters that want to experiment are encouraged to do so. Making anything from small figurines, large sculptures, and even cabinet handles can be accomplished with the use of bronze. The only limitations in bronze casting are with the caster himself.nnGo to Metal Casting Zone to get your free ebook on Metal Casting at Metal Casting. Learn about Cupola Furnaces, Cupola, and Cupola Foundry Information

October 16th, 2009

Cupola furnaces are the easiest and most economical furnace to work with for the small foundry owner. Hobby metal casters are always on a look out for a cheaper alternative which will provide safety and yield quality results and the cupola furnace delivers all this. nnThe common appearance of a cupola furnace is that of a smokestack. The furnace can be of nearly any size which is perfect for backyard metal casters. Commonly, the cupola furnace is supported on four legs with a drop bottom to remove any waste from the furnace. This type of furnace does not use a crucible so the metal caster will place the metal to be melted inside of the furnace. The furnace is fitted with a sprout and runner to pour the molten material which is called a taphole. Sometimes cupolas are fitted with a way for slag to be removed. The slag tapholes are located near the back of the cupola a little higher then the other taphole. The refractory used in cupolas are usually brick with the bottom being clay and sand as this is just temporary anyways. nnCupola casting usually involves working with iron and bronze, though other alloys like aluminum can be melted as well. nnThe common fuel source for cupolas is coke with limestone acting as a flux. Air can be pumped in to increase the burning of the coke. When the coke is hot enough the alloy is introduced in the top of the cupola. Some will place the alloy then fresh coke and then more alloy. The molten alloy will drip through the coke to collect in the well near the taphole. When the level of the molten alloy is high enough, the taphole is opened and then alloy runs into a ladle. When enough has poured the taphole is closed with the use of a refractory plug. Remember, cupola casting does not involve a crucible. nnCrucibles are traditionally used to melt the alloy and the collect it in the molten state. With the use of tongs the crucible is carried to the mold and poured. The ladle takes the place of the crucible in this regard. The metal caster pours the molten alloy which is in the ladle into the mold. The most common metal casting process is Sand casting which lends itself well with cupola furnaces. nnCupola furnaces can either be purchased or constructed. Many hobby metal casters prefer to construct their own cupolas finding it difficult to find a furnace to fit their size requirements or their budget. Cupolas have been made from coffee cans large pipes and really just matters on what materials the caster is able to procure. By making your own furnace you will be able to customize it. Many will need a furnace to be small and portable. No one wants to leave a furnace out in the rain, after all. The chances are pretty good that if you are into metal casting then you have some of the technical knowledge needed to make your own cupola furnace. If not, then it is worth a shot just be extremely careful. You may want to find someone in your community that can aid you in your endeavor. nnGo to Metal Casting Zone to get your free ebook on Metal Casting at Casting. The Complete Makeover of the Internet

October 16th, 2009

Compared to ten years ago the internet has gone through a completely overhaul of the use and functionality from when it was first managed. Since its first introduction the internet was first used as a way for the military and universities to share data with each other respectively.nnWhen I first got the internet at my house it was through a phone line and a 56k modem. My very first internet service provider or ISP was American Online or more commonly known as AOL. AOL was the very first internet provider I used at home and it was also very convenient because everyone that I knew also had AOL as their ISP.nnHowever because the internet was provided through a modem by a 56k modem it was very annoying to have your connection dropped every time someone else called you or someone in your household tried using the phone. Because of this my parents got a second phone line to prevent this but even so there were the spam phone calls we would get from telemarketers.nnBack in the day when AOL was extremely popular I remember a lot of things that kids all over the world would participate in. The most popular online activity that I remember kids would participate in were the online chat rooms where people would play text games and all sorts of other activities.nnOther games that were extremely popular were War Craft II, Star Craft and Diablo II. I remember I would spend hours on ends with friends and random people playing these 3 games whenever I had free time. But since the major way to get internet back then was through a phone line it was a complete breakthrough for me when we got our first broadband ISP.nnCompared to the very unreliable service you would normally get through a normal phone line, broadband was completely different. It would rarely disconnect you from the internet and also the amount of data was a lot faster compared to the predecessor. With the internet becoming more and more stable and reliable a new world of opportunities opens up for the everyday person. They can now create their own websites to whatever topic or theme they want. They can create communities of people with like minds to share their ideas and converse with each other.nnPeople can either pay for web service or get free web service through one of the popular free mediums such as personal sites such as MySpace and FaceBook, to community sites such as a Forum, Bulletin Board System or Wiki page. With such methods available for anyone with access to the internet people can connect with each other no matter where they are around the world.nnHowever this might come to an end in the US with the introduction of mediated online services that major ISPs are trying to pass through as a law within congress. The major ISPs will control the internet and will charge users fees to what they are able to see as well as the basic service of even accessing the internet.
